Resonance

Soon after successfully starting up and running the new turbine I had to shut it down. The guest staying in Barleycorn cottage woke me up at 12:30 am on Saturday 8th June to say that they were hearing water gushing in their garden every 10 seconds. I went up to find the vent pipe regularly overflowing (see previous post). It seems that the automatic Turbine controls had set up a resonance with the water level monitor in the forebay.

Water level rises Turbine Opens – Water level drops Turbine Closes –
Water level rises Turbine Opens – Water level drops Turbine Closes –
Water level rises Turbine Opens – Water level drops Turbine Closes. Etc.

This was resulting in water surges and flooding at the vent pipe.

As I was going off on holiday I had to shut the system down while I was away. Now, having arrived back, we have made some simple adjustments to the programed Turbine response to the change in water level and reaction times. The Turbine is back in action and -so far- now running smoothly.

  1. B**** resonance! we get a similar problem with guests using the shower in Rose Cottage – they just can’t wait for the combi boiler to respond to instructions given from the shower thermostastic valve. Result? too hot, too cold, too hot, too cold, too hot, too cold ……… breakages. I wish we could make some simple adjustments to them.
